hmmm
yeah i dunno what sustain means either. mind you, i don't know jack shit* about guitars. a guitar is a guitar to me!! all i know is that Nicholaus plays lead guitar and his guitar is called The Arsonette and he probably writes all the songs on it. Thats all I know.

Wasn't
...it something that the tune dies really quick so that you have to play the guitar all the time? Or something? I thought i read that in a interview with Nic, not sure though...

sustain
is when a note is carried on so if its sustainless it means they are really short

 hey
heres a quote from the interview about his guitar

But it takes a lot of note-picking for the Hives to achieve their sound. The guitar that Nicholaus Arson plays was designed so it won't make notes ring long at all. The guitar has none of the sustain that marks most rock music.

"It makes me play more," Arson says. "We always felt that guitar players that have sustain are lazy. We wanted everything to be very energetic and almost hyperactive all the time. If you have sustain, the hyperactiveness would just be lost in lazy guitar sounds."

Over the years, he has mostly played sustain-less Telecasters from the '50s, '60s, 1971 and 1978. But he also had a guitar built for him.

"I wanted the tone to die very quickly," he says. "If you have a tone that dies very quickly, you have to play the guitar all the time."

this is abouthow they use black and white stuff

''When we got new stuff, we had to vote things in, and not vote things out. Now we play with a color scheme, so we only use black and white guitars, which means I can't use my '71 or '78" Telecaster guitars. ''

hope u like the info

Interesting. When (or if) I get a guitar, do you think it would be better to get a sustain or a sustainless? I would like to play "punk" music when I do. Whaddayall think?

hey
i wonder what other guitarists use sustainless guitars? don't reckon Jack White does! Well, not on that song Ball and Biscuit anyway. does that mean you cant play solos on a sustainless guitar? what about the guitar solos in Diabolic Scheme and Love in Plaster?

um...
vig had the solo on Diabolic Scheme and on Love in Plaster, the way they do it is they both play, but Vig's guitar plays the hard points of the "riff" and Arson carries a faster version of the riff to back up the sound and carry it to the next part of the riff...........if that makes any sense at all.

i just thought that Arson played lead guitar, therefore all the solos and stuff and Vig played rhythm or something to make it louder. I swear when i saw em, Arson played the solo in Diabolic Scheme. maybe not.

hm...
i dunno, when i saw them they did the "band freeze" instead. I just figured it was Vig. And I wouldn't consider either of them lead guitarist... they both play pretty equal parts...

and if anyone had trouble interpreting my explaination earlier, listen to the riff on the chorus of "Oh Lord When How" you'll hear the hard riff, then fast guitar coming out of it as the riff ends each time.

yeah i guess you're right, i suppose its cuz Nicholaus is more of a showman than Vig and is always at the front so you just assume that he is lead guitarist. I guess you could say that they are twin guitars? I only know that phrase because of another band I like called Sleater-Kinney who have 2 guitars and no bass and they are referred to as "twin" or "siamese" guitarists, finishing each others parts and stuff. No lead or rhythm - doing both together. Thats pretty cool.

I like bands without bassists. You can hear the drums better I think. Like with the White Stripes. Mind you, I don't actually rate Meg White as a particularly great drummer. The drummer in Sleater-Kinney, she is absolutely amazing.

suits me. I like drummers who play tight and fast. i hate these tinny drummers you get now or the ones who play really flat. It has to be tight!

the von bondies have an amazing drummer. Oh and in case i gave the wrong message, i am not a bassist, i am a guitarist. But yeah, i would have been a drummer, but you have to sit, and i have too much "stage presence" to sit.

I like tight stuff, though *stop giggling Original* I like my pants tight, my shirts fitting in the right places, Cons (tight on my foot), and, of course, the Hives. Their energy is part of what makes them one of my favorite bands.
