well...
when i got barely legal it was in the alternative section, but when i got VVV it was in the "punk section" but when i got Tyrannisaurus Hives it was like the "Pop/Rock" section. so i'm not sure.

the amazingly wonderful almighty hives...
are indie alternative...with a bit of punk but i'd say theyre mostly indie alternative now.but no matter what their genre is,they'll always be the best band in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!i love them i love them i love them and i will always love them!!!!! ^.^

I dont think they're indie at all.. indie is usually slower paced.. like Bright Eyes is Indie Alternative..

The Hives are pretty hard to classify as their style has changed with different albums.
From what I've read on the internet "Barely Legal" was punk, "Veni Vidi Vicious" was garage rock/ punk and "Tyrannosaurus Hives" was garage rock.
However, if I had to be specific, I'd say garage rock.

I would say Garage
The definition for garage (in my view):
Raw rocky guitar music with heavy distortion and emphasis on noise over melody. Distorted chords are used a lot, often in simple four-chord phrases.

So, the Hives are garage to me. Hate To Say I Told You So is definitely a garage song, but in general they're a slight spikier than the average garage, though. That's part of their originality, though!
