I agree with both The_Union and LostLenore+some numbers. The guitar is starting to become not as cool to play because "Everybody and their mother" can. However I would not say it was overrated.
The dictionary defines 'Overrated' as:
"To rate or appraise too highly." Now, in my opinion it's not that people are saying guitar is the best thing since sliced bread. Quite the contrary in fact. People do it because they think by playing guitar they can make themselves more individual. In trying to be an individual, however, they are only conforming to what everyone is doing and is supposed to be cool.

I do however, think that you (The Union) are making a pompous ass of yourself. You truly have no right to say what one person can or cannot do. If someone wants to play the guitar, well, the best of luck to them. It's only when someone wants to play guitar for the wrong reasons, (Such as they want to be cool and be able to say "Hells yes I play the guitar.") Do I think it is stupid.
El Fin. (Sorry if that ends up not making any sense....And I guess in a way it is sort of overrated, and probably saying this now I am just undermining myself.)

like holy crapolla the union, you are one damn piece o' shite!
anyways, music is one of the best things in the world. everyone should have the opportunity to play an instrument. if guitar is there choice, let it be. you should be glad foo', the more people getting into guitar the better chance of there being some great quality guitarists is.
music isn't something you can hoard to yourself asshole.
