I hate the ridiculous amount of money that is spent on the building of 'places of worship'. I don't believe the government should help organized religion, in any way, whatsoever. I don't believe religious groups should be able to go 'door to door' preaching their nonsense. I don't believe they should be able to leave pamphlets on your doorsteps, either. Well, actually I'm sure I do hate all organized religion. I am by no means an atheist, I just believe that religion is a personal and private thing. What do you fine folks think? |

I think most people are failing to make the distinction between things like religion - spirituality - organized religion. It's an important distinction. And there are hundreds of religions and distinctions need to be made between these as well and a blanket statment that applies to all religions simply won't suffice. What I think is crap is when people: A: missunderstand their religion B: understand it but abuse it C: appeal to their religion as if it were empirical evidence. D: try to make everyone think that their religion is the one true religion. And while I can't think of any reason to REALLY be on this earth - I don't think there is a reason for human life - I believe that humans gravitate towards certain things and run from others and the things we admire most are virtous human beings. So if there is any way to be on this earth that makes sense in any way is to be virtuous because you're here and you might as well be what is good. I don't think that we are on this earth to be religious. I believe this to be the case because we all love virtuous people but we don't love anyone simply because they're religious - if that were the case I'd love my landlord (who is religious but is still a douchebagg). People who are good make us feel good to be alive and on this earth and that is what we need to be. Being religious is not the same as being virtuous. Being religious can help you become virtous but being religious really means nothing if it makes you meaner or dumber or doesn't change you for the better in any way. that's my 2 cents. |

I go to them often because I think its rather funny to listen to Jesus Freaks preach. We'll, at this particular meeting, the preachy guy was talking about how he had gone to a funeral that morning for a 22 year-old guy with a pregnant wife. The young man had been murdered. He talked about the funeral, and then said it was a GOOD thing he died, because HE WAS WITH GOD NOW!! WTF mate? And there was about 200 people at the meeting and everyone around me erupted in cheers and whoops. Because this poor guy died... I know this is just a little thing about the "crap" of religion, but since it happened to me so recently and I was so upset about it, I had to share it. I mean can you believe it, all kinds of Christians getting excited because a guy with his whole life ahead of him was murdered, leaving his widow to raise a child that would never know its father? If their "god" was so kind and great, why did he murder this man. Also at the meeting I think they try to brainwash you. Religion is a cult. The meeting lasted from 6pm to 6 am. An all night "staying up with Jesus" thing. Loss of sleep kills braincells, and killing your braincells is a way of brainwashing often used in cults. Another thing that made me mad was that the preachy guy blamed me for killing Jesus. Dumbass... it was the Romans. I congradulate you if you took the time to read this stupid thing I wrote. |

| kimbobway registered: 7/16/2004 00:00 posts: 1229 | holy shite that is some crazy stuff. too bad you guys have so much experience with religious fanatics. i believe in god but i'm really liberal and i don'y go snooping into other people's business or try converting them. i wasen't even raised to be religious, i chose it myself. i think everyone should have that choice. some people think the more fanatical you are the closer you are to god but it really just pushes people away and prevents a healthy relationship with god and other people. like my neighbour who was a drug addict and a neglectful mother, she was a religious nut but that didn't make her a good person no matter how holy she tried to be. |
