Hm, this is a hard one.
Please ... The Hives hands down. They got soul. The Vines are wannabe-Nirvanas.. I mean, they're okay, but they don't ROCK like The Hives do.

The Hives downright. The Vines' song Ride was cool, shame the new album is supposed to be naff, and I really didn't like their earlier stuff.

 This makes me giggle
Seeing as we are on The Hives website I figured it was sort of one-sided. Ah well, you already knew the answer. Lord, of course it's The Hives! Yeah, The Vines are fun too, but it's a different type of fun. A less fun fun. Really, anyone who says The Vines here has massive balls!

Hello
I've been a Hives fan for a long time, but I have to say the Vines are better. The Hives are fun, short rocking songs and awesome live shows but the songs are a bit too similar in the end... The Vines on the other hand have a greater range in their songs.

had to post in two parts for some reason.
They can be bad live, and the lyrics are crap in many songs but they always deliver great melodies. And the new album is really not as bad as some reviews say, it's not quite as good the first one, but it has their best song yet on it, "Winning Days" and few other great songs like "Rainfall" and "Animal Machine".

As if.
What kind of question is this? I don't care who's website we're on. There is no contest. It's silly to even wonder who would "win" in a showdown between the Hives and the Vines. That's like asking who would win in a match between Bruce Lee and Ted Koppel. Of course the Hives would win.

Hives kick Vine totally
The Vines singer is too busy trying to seem "heavy" while Pelle and co. are just having fun rocking out. Hives have a waaaaay betteer live show...

James! woohoo, a .netter!

I wouldn't say The Vines singer is trying to seem "heavy", more like slightly weird. He's a wonderful songwriter though. I agree that the Hives have a better live show, even though I've only seen the Vines live shows in videos, they won't come here... The Hives are great live, Howlin' Pelle is hilarious.

 Hives vs. Vines
The lustre of the Vines is that they have no rergard for anyone or anything. They've been kicked off various television shows for their drunkenness and general distaste. The Hives bring a different, perhaps more coherent aura to the world of rock and roll. Musically, there is no question. Listening to a Vines' song is like listening to a "clusterfuck". All that can amount is, "What is going on?" Some songs are trippy whereas some are raging: very characteristic of stoners. Eventhough Vines' songs tend to be more unpredictable, and thus desirable, the Hives' bring a circular style to the music. They begin and end, everything complete. The Hives are better.

Fads they come and fads they go;
and, God, I love that rock and roll!

Oh come on
The Vines are not overrated. They were overhyped at one point, but the media is no longer supporting them the way they did when Highly Evolved came out. It's pretty silly to be rocks saviours one day and trash the other, but that's the way it works in some papers (NME)... They've never been either actually, just the same great band the whole time. It's funny that you're calling them overrated, since you're obviously just reciting some magazines view of things instead of actually listening to them before you make up your mind. The Vines have tunes the Hives (or Strokes or White Stripes) will never be able to compare to. The only problem is that they lack the direction and cohesion of the other it bands, which has resulted in some bad reviews, but if you look at every song individually, The Vines wins hands down.

Vines = eh, whatever Hives = ROCK!
The Vines' "Ride" is good, but I don't like much of their other stuff. I can play VVV over and over and never get sick of it, but The Vines can start to get boring. But really, there's no comparison. The Hives have genius, originality, and they don't care what anyone thinks of them because THEY KNOW they're the best. I love their cockiness - it's hilarious! The Vines are just another band.

Hate to say it's hard to explain.
Well, Hives is really different than Vines. It's like say: Which is better: tomato or banana? But, personally, I prefer the Hives, like 'nobodysallowedtohavemyname' said: I can play VVV or any of their songs eternally and never get tired. But the Vines, n'ah! They play good music, but not so good than Hives does.

But I think that the big fight would be:

"THE HIVES vs. THE STROKES"
What to do you think?

EQUAL!
the hives and the strokes are equally f'ing amazing in my books, i could never answer such a question ! both are pretty different sounding and both have there better points to them but yea, my 2 fav bands FOR SURRRe

PS- The hives are really like a younger more new age rolling stones with faster more energetic songs!

oh and the vines have there moments but mostly are kinda lame

The Hives
I love the Strokes as well, but after listening to The Hives, they seem kinda slow. And a lot of the Strokes' songs sound the same. If it wasn't for the long break between songs I'd think it was one big continuous song practically. Still, I like the Strokes, but I don't think any band's better than The Hives.

Actually...
The same could be said about the Hives, many of their songs sound very alike. They're great at what they do, but they don't vary the formula alot. Which of course goes for the strokes too.

The Vines on the other hand, they have short, fun songs like ride or outtathaway and also the more mellow ones like homesick and winning days. And they pull both off better than most bands too.

Jackie Chan vs Bruce Lee, anyone?
I remember this question from when I was in high school, except it was "Who would win in a fight, Henry Rollins or Glen Danzig?" (by the way the answer is that Henry Rollins would discuss the benefits of non-violence while Glen Danzig attemts to put a satanic curse on Henry.)

I don't know about you, but I saw them both live at the Metro in Chicago at different times. The hives were high energy consummate showmen. Amazing. The rest of the Vines however, as well as the audience, during their show were visibly pissed off at the lead singer's drunken inability. No energy, forgotten words. LAME.

It's true that they can be awful live. But at least they're a bit more spontaneous than the Hives, who are very choreographed... Besides, the vines are probably best on record anyway, craig nicholls (the singer) always goes on about how he would want them to just be a studio band.

To me a band has to be good live to be good at all. It seems like the Vines don't really care about their fans at all if they arrive drunk and stoned and can't even play.

I am a fan of both bands, but the Hives wins easily... the Vines, i don't know... they get old fast and then they get annoying and i can't listen to them for a few months. But not with the Hives...

I think the Hives sound a little more origianal.

You want to see the Hives vs the Vines?
It already happened. It was the 2003 MTV music awards. The hives played on the small stage and rocked everyone. Howlin Pelle said the perfect thing at the end. "I know you want us to play more, but this is all the time we have, so you can turn off now!" Then the Vines played, and about 2 people had their hands in the air. Sad. Sad and depressing. I saw the Vines live as I did the Hives. The lead singer of the Vines was visibly drunk and he got hit on the shoulder by his own band members for depressing the crowd.
If you want footage of the nationally shown idiocy (with a great performance by the Hives) e mail me at treble_head@hotmail.com

What losers (the Vines). Why do they even preform? You're so lucky you saw the Hives though. People are always saying how great they are live and I wish I could see them but they never come to Canada.

 the hives vs. franz ferdinand
what do you think this time this new band have rocked up on aussie shores and every where in cd stores now you see there cd's everywhere with big posters and cardboard cut outs.

i couldn't decide on this one franz ferdinand is a bit lower paced but they do have some great lyrics and tunes. the hives are fast and furious at there lyrics which is what makes them cool.

so yeah what do you think of that question.
