one answer, sorta
Well, I think they've never really been interested in putting politics in their music. That said, I think they are probably left wing at least, they are frineds of the international noice conspiracy (a communist band) and they also protested against the EMU after their show at last years hultsfreds festival.

hey wettis since i live on the other side of the world what was the emu protest about? just curious

by the way the hives do a seventies garage rock style of music and judging by there lyrics and pelle's vocals i think the message is..

no message
yeah, i don't think there's much of message behind hives songs...except ROCK. lol
seriously though, the lyrics on stuff like "hate to say.." don't make any sense, and the songs with lyrics that do make sense are usually about jerks that they were annoyed with.

i would think that the would support a left of centre party though.

They rock
If the lyrics weren't written inside, would you understand them all? Ahahah I love The Hives.

 yoa
sure there are some politic messages in their songs. just a few but there are some.

--> "... i know that i am up against a mighty mighty man..." --> "the hives are law, you are crime" --> "...had an atomic bore in 2004, did some atomic tricks in 2006..." --> "... i don't wanna be a number...you are just a number..."

sorry for the late reply
Well, as you may or may not know, the EMU (european monetary union) is a project to unite all the countries in the European Union under one currency (the euro) and some common laws. Most countries agreed to join this when they joined the union, but Sweden and a few other countries had reservations against it. There was a vote last year about whether sweden should join the EMU or not. Most leftfield people were against this as it was seen as capitalistic or something like that (can't remember and won't bother digging it up). The Hives protested against the EMU by rolling down a huge "No to the EMU" flag over their stage after they finished playing (and instead of an encore, grr, "no here we go again")...

hmm
Have you not read the back of Barely Legal? The Hives dislike (blatant paraphrasing) both Communism and Capitalism, so far as they both discourage free thought. Having said that the lyrics to supply n demand, and automatic schmuck ain't exactly right wing. But then they come from sweden. Scandinavia is pretty much the only place on earth where developed countries have anything even vaguely socialist going on.

true
yeah thats true it does say that on the back of barely legal. I think I'd be funny if they were communists or at leest pretended to be. The Ramones(except they wore swatztickas, nazism) and Dead Boys kinda did that a while back to get a rise out of people. Sounds like something the hives would do. Communism gets all tangled up in facism over here in the states. Not one in the same dammit. Lol. Hives rule! What intervieew was that by the way? I'd like to read it.

their lyrics rock
If you actually read their lyrics, they're full of meaning, though the grammar can be hard to understand. Most of their songs seem to be about annoying people who don't like them, or people they don't like (like their name The Hives - as in an itch), or about their contempt for conformists and fakers (like how they pretend that Fitzsimmons formed them like a boy band) and people who don't like them cause they don't understand them. I bet the songs that don't exactly make sense to us have some sort of hidden meaning (probably a jab at someone), like so much of the mysterious stuff circulating around The Hives. I kinda get the picture that they don't care whether people understand what they mean, they just like to laugh at jerks. There's at least one genius in The Hives, and probably two.
